I am not sure if there is a wind-up going on here or not. I asked a question about mosquitos last week and some people came back talking about 'noseeums' Can anybody explain further, or is it just a bit of fun?

I think this is the local lingo for midges, or similar. Try the islands off the west coast, or the west coast in general if you wanna get more aquainted/bitten to death!

We're spending a week in Captiva during August. Does this mean we have to cope with these as well as the giant alligators that have been eating people there?

I spent a week in Captiva and yes the noseeums are are real problem in the evenings.
They are called noseeums because they are tiny and appear at dusk and you literally cannot see them - although you can hear and feel them!
That said Captiva is so nice that it is a small price to pay. Just take precautions - long sleves/no shorts/sprays - in the evening.
You can tell the tourists on Captiva - they're the ones eating dinner at the outside tables!!!!
We go down to Vero Beech and the noseums are a real problem there or they are for me.They are usually only a problem at night and they do not effect everybody.I have been told by Americans that the best thing to put on your skin is Avon Skin so Soft.
I got bite bad in Vero beach midday..I still have the scars..my daughter was the same ..my husband was fine..nothing bites him...
In Europe all mossies and biting insects home in on me but I never have a problem in Florida.
Fortunately the villas advertised on this site nearly always have screened pool cages which means you can sit outside in the evening.
In the evening if you are going outside the pool area it is advisable to spray with an insect repellant. I find Badger Anti-bug Balm works for me. It is a Citronella balm available from Boots.
It is strange how they bite some people and not others. When I was young I used to get badly bitten, but as I got older and discovered alcohol the bites have stopped.
There must be a connection there somewhere.
