Why don't you buy a small fishing scale to put in your case, that way you can weigh your cases and adjust them all to the maximum allowance for your flight. We bought one that goes up to 50kg for only £3.50 which is a lot less than you get charged for being over weight.
If 5 of you were travelling with Virgin in economy that would mean you could have 10 cases (23kg each) and 5 flight bags (5kg each)

    Hi all
We are just back (friday) and a family on our flight got charged $145 for bringing back their baby's stuff ,ie nappies, pram was all weighed and counted in their allowance ( the baby had no seat as under 2 so also had no allowance.)We were on First Choice so it seem this is the airlines new money making scheme!

You get a bag for the baby plus a pushchair in your allowance if you travel with BA and I'm sure other schedule airlines do the same, it is maybe something you need to cost out when you look at flights.
