    Holiday Insurance

    Hi everyone

We've got 3 weeks until our trip and I started looking at holiday insurance today.

Can anyone give me some pointers here - what should I looking to be covered for and how much should I be paying.

We're 2 adults and 3 kids and staying for 3 weeks.

    thanks
    Jackie

You really should of got your insurance as soon as you booked your trip. If anything happens to anyone prior to the trip and you need to cancel you require the insurance.
The main thing in the US is probably medical insurance, make sure you have good cover for this.
Also you may wish to check that you are covered for any water sorts if you are planing to do any.

Looking at where you are, I would start with your bank and credit card people, both of whom normally provide international travel insurance.

I hear you Christine but, well, we didn't. So now I'm doing it and hopefully nothing will go wrong between now and when we actually go!

How much medical cover should I be looking for?

    thanks

Most insurers have a good idea of the cover required, if you tell them you are going to the US they will normally quote you for adequate cover.

One quoted me $5 per day for a maximum of $200,000 medical cover (we're not taking that one for obvious reasons!)

VISA offered us $1 million medical cover for a total of $300 for 24 days for all 5 of us.

    I'd welcome your thoughts Graham.

    thanks

Trouble is that Jackie lives in Israel and not in the UK and I think UK based insurers will only cover UK residents.

The Visa one sounds good Jackie and our annual travel insurance is currently with AmEx. Ours provides cover for certain water sports, etc in with the premium. If you can find anything comparable for a cheaper price, then that's even better although make sure it's with a reputable company.

I know insurance sounds expensive but, in the unhappy event that someone is taken ill whilst in the USA, you'll be so glad you have it as medical costs are sky high. Even one trip to the doctor is $100 - $200 and that's without any medication prescription. My mother has had an eye problem while we've been in Florida and one tiny little bottle of eye drops cost $129.

I would say that the Visa one looks good, and a fair price for what you are getting. 1 million cover should be OK.
