The only trouble crossing State lines with a hire car is the cost..Ins is high if you take a car out of State..

It can be a boring trip..but I'd still do it..we drive down from MA once a year..if we had more time.. there are loads of places to see if you leave the highway...
IF You look on the internet..you should get lots of info on places to pull off and see..

There is absolutely no real border line crossing from state to state in the US. We drive from Florida to Ohio both via the 95 and the 75 and there is no border line. It is not like the old European borders with customs, the US is all one country so you really don't know you have crossed into another state unless you notice the signs. No border guards or anything like that it is all just one long boring road.

We have just driven from Washington Dulles airport to Orlando......by choice.
We crossed through 9 states, no problem with that, sometimes you don't even know you have entered another state!
We travelled through GA but along the coast and stopped off in Savannah which was well worth a visit.
As we were on the coast we also popped into St Augustine which is on our list of places to return to.

If I was doing that trip I think I would stop off at St Augustine. We spent a day there a few years ago. It has an old fort there dating back to the times when spain had Florida. In fact St Augustine is the nations oldest city. It has cobble stone streets and quaint cafes. Well worth a visit.
