Don't shred your boarding cards till you've made sure you've got your airmiles though.

A interesting post, and something we are up against all the time in Financial Services.

We have that Data Protection Act which tells us that we should not tell anybody anything Versus the Money Laundering Regulations that tell us we should keep information on people for up to 7 years including copy passports, bank statements, utility bills etc. Infact most of the things you are advised to shread.

Try getting a mortgage if you are not on the voters roll, and cannot prove your address for the last 3 years.

As usual you have different depatments pulling in totally different directions.

Keith is right, there is a massive amount of data out there about all of us. Your supermarket loyalty card is a prime example. They know what you buy, when you buy it and how much you spend every week. They can tell you how many cans of baked beans you have eaten in the last year.

Keith is right there is a lot of data about us out there. I am currently trying to get to the bottom of how a letter from NS&I was sent to me at my brother's (different surname) address quoting my reference number. My sister-in-law and I have a joint building society account in connection with our villa with all correspondence going to her but have never had any other financial connections. It concerns me what would have happened had they moved out of the property and my information got into the hands of someone dishonest.

I shred junk mail.. credit card stuff mostly....but I have boxes for each year going back about 6 years and go though one each year to see if I can get rid of anything..I've always burnt my stuff in the fire winter time...its quicker than shreding tons of paperwork...I've never thrown a statement out in my life..I've always destroyed them after keeping them so many years...

Wuite right to post Julie. On the news yesterday was the statement that "it is illegal for European airlines to inform the US government of passenger details..."

The airlines are liable to be fined upto $6,000 per passenger for not supplying info to the US but if they do, they are breaking EU law. You couldn't make it up could you.
    [/quote]

Not exactly correct. The EU have until the 30th September to come up with a legal way of supplying the info to the US.
