Please could someone advise which is the cheapest way to pay for accommodation in dollars, when you don't hold a US bank account. I will be renting from someone in the US.

The cheapest way for you would probably be to buy US dollar travellers checks froom the travel agents and post them over, you'll no doubt have to change some spending money anyway.
The owner can then just pay them into the bank as a normal check.

As Steph says this is a cheap way of sending the dollars. Just be aware though that if they should go missing in the post they in effect can be paid in by anybody as you will have to sign for both issuing and payment before you put them in the post. Consider Registered Mail if you use this method.
Bernie, can you pay the American owner using a credit card? This is the cheapest option, even if the owner has an admin fee as you generally get an excellent rate from the CC companies.
All of my guests pay me in US$ and most opt to pay by credit card. If you do send something registered to America it could take anything from 4 or more weeks to get there.
If you can't pay by credit card, then I would opt for a bank wire transfer. This is a safe method. Much safer than sending anything via registered mail.

I recently paid for some stock in U.S dollars using the Moneygramm service at the post office. It is a secure way of sending money, there is a fee but that depends on the amount to be transferd. You are given a security code which the other person needs to retrieve the cash. They can go into any post office within the state and get their money. The transfer takes around 10 mins.I found it to be the easiest way of getting the dollars to the supplier.
Just go to your bank and get them to give you a US$ cheque.
You used to be able to write one of your own cheques in US$ - simply crossing out the £ and putting $ and writing 'US Dollars' at the end of the written amount. I haven't done that for years so I would check with your bank first.
Given the poor exchange rate for Travellers Cheques I would have thought that an expensive way, as well as unsafe. It is almost like sending him US$ notes.

Your Bank can certainly provide you with a cheque made out in US$, but you can't just doctor your own cheque.

If they have an e-mail address you could always use PayPal....
Another way of paying in US Dollars is perhaps to take either US cash or travellers cheques with you and arrange to pay the owners MC on arrival at the villa. If you use this method then the owner will give you the directions to the villa but not the code until the MC has met with you.
Have a great holiday.
