    security deposit

We have been back from our vacation for a month. We have tried to get in contact with the owner about getting our security deposit back. He claims to have sent it on April 7th. We did not receive it. I e-mailed him again on April 21st. He said he would stop payment on the first check and would send another check. It has now been over week again. How long does it take to send something from England to the US? What can I do if I do not receive it it another week?

Airmail from the UK to the US can take up to about ten working days but averages 4 - 7 days. If mail is sent surface then it can take up to six weeks.

If you haven't received it in around another week or so, then I'd email the owner again and ask whether he sent the check via airmail and when it was mailed.

I'm just wondering that, as the air mail charge from the UK was increased recently, whether the owner knows this. If not and he has put the previous postage amount on the envelope, there's a possibility that it could have been diverted to surface mail instead.

We had that problem last year returning a guests security deposit, but in our case unbelievably two checks went missing !! the third took 3 weeks to get there, I'm sure the people thought I hadn't sent it but the were very good about it. The first two never did turn up and by the time they recieved the third it must have been getting on for 2 months. All I could do was apologise and hope that they believed me.

Like Blott says it can take a few days to get there via surface mail. If you have not got it back soon I would send them another e-mail.

We had the reverse problem in that a check from a guest arrived in the UK after 10 days but never arrived at my U.S. bank on the return journey. I'm sure it will turn up soon.

While most of the time mail gets between UK and US without any problems its not that unusual to have the odd bit of mail take longer to arrive. I've had some panic moments when checks I posted to my bank in the US took 14 days to arrive although thank goodness they turned up eventurally.
I also had a guest who tried mailing me a twice only to have both letters returned to her a week later having never left the US. Never did find out why.

Blott, or anyone else that knows the answer, what is the new price? I'm still putting 47p stamps on my post, infact I sent 3 letters yesterday with this on them.
