I'm not sure about that (others may know), but you can buy them in the States as well, they're very reasonably priced. We bought a set for our guests and they are great.

The simple answer to your question is "no". They have different frequencies to what we use here, legally that is.

They will be cheaper to buy when you get to the U.S.
However as has already been said both countries use different wavelengths. This means that while the radio may work you will be operating in a restricted band used by the emergency services. This could cause serious problems for someone who needed their help or you if you were caught.

For the price of them, say from Walmart, it's not worth the hassle
They're cheap enough to use for a couple of weeks then either through away, save for your next trip or even leave in the villa for the next visitors.
If you happen to be staying in a villa you could ask the owners if there are any radios there already - I've seen some that advertise that they have.

Sports Authority at the loop shopping complex on John Young Pkwy were selling some very small 2 way radios for less than $100 a pair with a range of upto 7 miles. Thats a lot more powerfull than the ones available in uk.
