    Virgin from Glasgow

I must ask if anyone else saw something in the paper about Virgin starting to fly from Glasgow next summer - my dad is convinced that he saw an article saying this but im not sure!! Apparently they will only be flying a couple of days a week during the summer hols. This would be great news for all us Scots who have to travel south of the border to get a Virgin flight. [clap]

Yep i saw this too. Now im sure someone will correct me if im wrong but i think its only one flight per week (saturday?) during summer holidays and half term. A total of 10 flights. The flight is routed from Manchester - Glasgow - MCO outbound and MCO - Glasgow - Manchester inbound. Hopefully they are a success and lead to a regular scottish service from Virgin.

How can this really be called a new route? Isn't it no more than Virgin arranging connecting flights from Glasgow to their existing Manchester service? You could easily make the arrangments yourself.

Last year they tried to claim that they had started a new service to Fort Myers in Florida. When I looked into it they were simply using Delta flights to make the connection.

    Found this.....

Virgin is to fly from Glasgow to Florida next summer, marking the airline's first flight from Scotland, The Glasgow Herald reports.

Although Virgin stressed it would only operate ten flights to Orlando during the school holidays and half term, industry voices expressed a hope that the news could signify more to come from Virgin.

The Scottish airline [name edited] flies to Sanford, near Orlando and the area has become increasingly popular with Scottish holidaymakers who want to explore further afield than Spain.

An industry source told the newspaper: "I would say this is a significant announcement from one of the leading holiday airlines in the UK.

"Virgin is a massive international brand and this is their first foray into the Scottish market. The fact that Scotland is now on their radar is significant in itself."

However, a spokeswoman for Virgin noted that the flights were "really only a one-off" and didn't promise that more were to come.

I don't think this is Virgin arranging connecting flights to Manchester. From what I have seen it is the Manchester flight landing at Glasgow on the way out to pick up passengers, then on the way back stopping at Glasgow to drop passengers off again.

Yes, I see now - can't see it being a hit with Manchester passengers who will have longer flights. The last thing I'd want on the way home is to stop to drop other passengers off before I reach my destination.

I can't see this working as during peak times the Manchester flights are always full, unless its when they have the extra flight a day from Manchester [msnscared]

No but it will be popular with those passengers who have to travel a long distance to get to Manchester in the first place. I am sure a quick stop in Glasgow (when it pretty much flies over it anyway) is less on an inconvienence than a 3 1/2 hour drive back up the road when you have not slept a wink on the flight home. It would be nice to see any airline notice that Scottish passengers do deserve the same service that our southern counterparts are able to take advantage of.

I totally agree with you. The problem with all the departure points outside the London airports is a lack of competition. As a result, Virgin charge Manchester passengers high fares because they have the only direct scheduled service to Orlando. The thing that surprises me about this service is that the Manchester service going this way is no longer 'direct'. It would be interesting to see if Virgin charge the same fare from Manchester on this route as the non-stop service and whether the time saved by flying direct is lost making the other (and usually much cheaper) indirect services more attractive.

I agree with you to, but this is only going to happen on 10 flights, its quote as being a one off, so I would assume the Manchester passengers would either pay less than normal or if it was me I would travel on another day[msnwink]
