unfortunately as soon as the word heart enters the fray then the medicos just roll the numbers dice. we have had the same problem for my father in law, he had quad by pass 15 years ago but has visited australia. penang etc about 10 times since and has been back in to casualty once in that time , but was ok.

i dont know the ethicos of travellling uninsured re the heart area.clearly a different kind of dice throwing but i just think that if i had been trouble free for so long/against a 2/3k premium for a 2 week holiday?!?!?!? dont know....[/quote]Liz is right, don't even think about it. Someone I know was in Intensive Care for a week. The cost? Over $1 million - and that was six years ago.

What happened about the bill though?

Did they actually have to pay it?

Were they detained in the US until they did pay it?

Or did they just come home and ignore the (inevitable) litigation on the grounds that they didn't have the money anyway?

    They were insured.

Yes, of course you have to pay the bill - otherwise all treatment would be free in the US (which isn't the case).

If you don't have the money to pay (after you've sold your house, car, etc) then presumably you get into payment plans - for a very, very long time!

I think Blotty means my son Alex, he had a 5 week stay in intensive care and the total bill was over a million dollars. The insurance settled it and wde still get the odd bill coming through to us now.
If you have no insurance the hospital will stabalise you and then get you off to a training hospital -you will not get the best care. Plus they can and do come after you in the uk for the money.
The costs are horrendous $25 for paracetomal. 2 night stay with test for suspect heart attack (it was stress) $20,000.
    Broken arm $3000.

Thanks everyone so far for all the replies. The best quote so far has been age concern, they will cover my dad for the 15 days for around £160 (with an excess of £500 - which is by far the best quote).

I had the same problem when trying to find insurance for self and husband for 3 weeks in in May 2006 in USA. We both have treated hypertension and my husband had a lone heart fibrillation episode three years ago. The range of quotes was staggering and the highest was £1700 for the two of us. I found Age Concern wanted £400 for us both.

I was delighted to find a firm called Atlas Direct who eventually sent us through the medical side first and we were invited to pay for preconditions first as an extra. This avoided lengthy questioning and form filling only to find it was too expensive finally. This medical screening only amounted to an eventual charge of £40 for my husband and they didn't consider treated hypertension to be much of a risk and charged nothing extra. Then you go to the normal policy people and take this out as well. We got both of us insured, preconditions included for £150 for the three weeks.

The medical cover policies arrived separate from the main travel policies which followed a couple of days later. Very efficient and friendly. These people are well worth getting your quote from.

My mother has insulin controlled diabetes, hypertension & some form of anaemia (I can't remember the medical name) - she has annual worldwide-trip insurance via flexicover and her premium taken out in February this year was about £250 with the pre-existing conditions covered. Oh, and she turns 70 this year!

We thought that this was a pretty good deal, and if I remember correctly they will cover people up to age 80.

    Hope this helps

    Chris
