With all US mobiles you pay to make and receive calls so the same for texts wouldn't be a surprise.

we use our phones a lot when in Florida - we have an inclusive package. Our texts also are free/included when we text or receive texts from the UK. The call charges are very expensive and all are charged for - around £1.00 per minute.
If you are planning to call home get a Net10 phone and call home with that it is $30 from any Walmart and ask them to set it up for you. We find that the best way to go, it does not allow international texts but if you send any it looks like they go and you are charged for them.
hope this helps
Your best bet is to get a phonecard where you can ring UK for a couple of cents/min from a prvate phone.
For $25 or so you can buy a pay as you go US cell phone to send & receive texts. Calls to the Phonecard No are approx 10c/min
anyone heard of this as there rates are good,Red Pocket Calls to UK fixed lines will be 16 cents a minute and 32 to UK mobiles. Texts are 10 cents each to send and receive.
