As Chris says it depends on the person doing your paperwork. Sometimes I have been asked and other times not.

I think you have to be prepared in case you are.

We always have gold cover and have always had to leave a card imprint, never had anything charged against it, but always had to leave it.

We had the gold cover when we went out last month and didn't have to leave a card imprint!

We have used Dollar & Alamo and have allways been asked to leave a credit card swipe.

Dont forget your counterpart paper license as well as your card/photo license, the rental companies are increasing asking for it now. because the US are checking traffic violations of UK and other nationals.
