Ahhhh a true salesman. What a load of old cobblers. A 3G card to do word processing? A 3g card would only be required if you wanted true mobile connections anywhere, otherwise take an ethernet cable or with the more modern laptops use the built in wireless at home or in hotspots.

Our schools use Dell as they had an arrangement with the local education, but now they have put up the prices and so we are back to Tohiba, mine is a Toshiba, a few years old now but as it belongs to school I won't complain.

I spent $2000 on a laptop at best buy an E-Machine last year and bought a converter back in England and it wasn't that cheap. Within 2 months it fried my laptop literally when I saw smoke coming out of the back. It was ruined and I wouldn't do it again.

Phil bought a Fujitsu in the USA - it's the only laptop he has kept for over a year - he really loves it.

As I've said before Toshiba (even bought in USA) are great for aftersales in the UK.

My bad experience with Packard Bell came when I was a manager for Dixons Stores Group - they had about a 1 in 4 return rate back then but may be different now.

    Hi Trev,

I've had three laptops now - an old Sony Vaio (which was great , but heavy) Then a Panasonic
CF - R1 which was superbly light (998grams) and small but lacking in built ins like CD/DVD and wireless. Now I use a Sony T2XP - excellent, very compact and light and all the built in facilities you need.
I haven't noticed a huge price difference in USA laptops to UK ones and there are small differences such as US English keyboards etc.
Plenty of new and s/h laptop bargains on Ebay if you like to dabble. Got my last two from there for excellent prices.

I can thoroughly recommend an Acer. I've had mine now for just over a year, and it's a great lightweight fully-spec'd piece of kit, with a genuine worldwide guarantee. Used it both on the modem and wifi in our rental villa last year.

Check the www for prices, there's a huge range to choose from.

I use a dell 400 for work, and personally I find the wifi less capable of finding a signal than my Acer.

btw - I apologise to anyone else who found my earlier joke about mac users offensive, which was the reason my first post was removed.

    Cheers

    VV

No jokes about Mac users permitted here. There are too many of us who use their laptops and swear by them.
After, my previous toshiba laptops, the Macs have everything and even come with free software for many everyday tasks that a villa owner needs to do.
Don't force me to ever buy a PC laptop again!
