I would be very careful about buying a crash helmet in the USA, for a start it will not comply with BS standards and should (God forbid) anything happen you may have problems with insurance etc.

I am a motorcyclist and to be honest the prices are not very different, if you need new leathers go to a motorcycle show or a meet in the UK. dealers often sell at way below recommended retail price.

Not worth risking your life for...

I agree NEC is a great show in Oct I think!!!

when we where there in Jan
we drove to clear-water and on the way back some young Kids on Race bikes came passed us on one wheel they only look about 16 same age as my son all with young girls on the back
no helmets and no Leathers just shorts and t-shirts
    our heart stop
    we all felt sick ,
fear of them coming off in front of us on the I4 [msneek]

    Mmmmmmmm Bikes.

I've had a few Suzuki GSXR's 600 & 750's and a Kawasaki 600 Ninja. I really fancy another one, but I know it scares Mrs Macka when I'm out on one even though She's a great pillion passanger so I've made a decision not to get another[msnsad].

On topic, I agree, you can't gurantee safety specification so get your stuff here Teresa.

It is real hard to locate leathers in Florida.

The sort of shops they have (Harley) are more than likely not the sort of bike leathers most would want.

Most of the riders who have big bikes normally don't ride in them as the weather is so hot.

Daytona has some good bike shops, so that might be a look.

Beg to differ with regard to prices, I bought a ARAI quantum f, tear-off's and spare visor for around £150 less than here in the uk from The Helmet Shop in Daytona.
I have to agree they do not have the gold bs standard sticker on them but I very much doubt that they would make an inferior helmet just for the states.

    Hi Mick,

Regarding the purchase and use of a motorcycle crash helmet from the USA I would suggest that you may be interested in the following information:

The Road Traffic Act 1988 Sections 16(1) 17(1) and 18(1) explain that it is an offence to use a crash helmet in this country that does not comply with the standards laid down.

The standards are ECE 22-05 or the older BS6658. The US standards are DOT which is not acceptable in this country. So, basically if you wear a helmet bought in the USA your technically breaking the law.

I agree that they are hardly going to produce an inferior product for use in the USA but quite simply they do not comply with the law in the UK. I know that if all goes well there will never be a problem, but believe me, I work as an accident investigator for insurance companies and if the worse should happen they will use every trick in the book to get out of liability.

    Hi to all
I too, have a Harley-Davidson and I have found that, for the most part, purchasing all of these items above at bike show is a better buy. With regards to safety items and how they comply with governmental rules, I would be concern with those that apply with those that apply to the locale I would live or reside in. As far as other items, with regards to motorcyclist, I have found JC Whitney to be a good place to purchase such items,as well as on EBay. Take this as an example! I needed two new tires on my Harley badly, I drove to Daytona on ‘Bike Week’ and purchase them, at a great price and had them installed for free. Also purchased leather gloves and jacket less than halve price. Just about at every corner, they all sell the same items and for the most part they, the vendors, undersell each other. I don’t know how are ‘Bike Shows’ at UK, but I’m sure there are good deals to be had. Good luck.

As an ex-despatch rider who always wore top quality leathers, I would respectfully suggest buying your leathers in the UK. They will be designed for our climate, can be made to measure and you can take them back for refitting when required.
    Regards, Mark
