We got upgraded 3 years ago with BMI, after a 24 hour delay in Chicago
The flight was great, only trouble was we were all very tired and slept most of the way
Still the meal was fab and we all had more room[msnsmile2]

Me and Mrs Macka get upgraded regularly. I'd say out of the last 10 flights to Florida, we've been upgraded to club/business 8 times one way or the other (but never both ways strangely) twice we've had to pay a bit more but nowhere near as much as the regular fare.

There are ways to maximise your chances of an upgrade and some real no no's but you have to work on being happy with your original class otherwise you can get to be dissappointed that you didn't get an upgrade, if you see what I mean? It does spoil you I think.

    Hi Macka,
I am quite happy to fly any class, as long as I am on my way to Florida. Are you going to give any of us some pointers as to how we can maximise our chances of an upgrade or are they your own secrets? (wouldnt blame you really if they were secret, who would want all of us trying to get upgraded with you. lol)

Well Julia, me too, as long as we're on our way, however, it is nice in club (never got to first yet) especially on the way back. Anyway keep it to yourself, but here's my top tips for getting an upgrade. You've still got to get real lucky though.

    1. Your flight has to be a full, preferably overbooked one, so that the airline has to push everyone up a class.

    2. Be really nice to your check in folk.

    3. Be as smart as you can, and be discreet, look like you'll behave yourself, and do so, the airline won't want you annoying full paying passengers or letting it be known you got upgraded for free.

    4. Kids might be a problem, but I've assumed that, I'm not sure. Purely from the point of view that mum, dad and 2 kids is 4 people.

    5. Get into a frequent flyer programme.

You can't do much more short of clamping onto the check in persons ankles and crying.

Which I'd sink to if I thought it would make any difference.

I know you have to dress very VERY smartly, no jeans.
When we were queuing up for a flight back to Australia in Heathrow, this couple came along, she was in a beautiful dress, he was in a full suit. The First Class assistant approached them and asked for their tickets, thinking they were for her, and then directed them to the economy queue! Everyone was smiling, they'd obviously hoped for an upgrade. So for the next 24 hours, whilst we were cooped up in economy in casual gear, they were trying to blend in, looking like they were going to Ascot!
