Similar or stiffer consistency of porridge and grits don't taste of anything and normally served with melted butter on top. A bit like pollenta I suppose, only instead of being slightly yellowy like pollenta, it's more the colour of mashed potato.

As grits don't taste of anything, it's easy not to dislike it! [msnwink] Normally served with breakfast items, you may also find it available in places like Waffle House with a main course as an option.

If you totally hate grits (and I can't see why anyone should but I guess some do), just ask for an alternative if a dish you want comes with grits automatically.

Give grits a whirl - you never know, you might like it!

I've heard lots of people (Brits) say they don't like grits - but I think it's not that the taste is awful - rather that it's a 'nothing 'taste.

For me, it wasn't so much the taste that I didn't like, but the texture.

I have to admit to being a grits 'hater' and like Emm do not like the texture. We always bring some home as the men in the household like it as an alternative to porridge (don't like that either).

I'm probably one of the few who love grits. It is made out of corn - ground to little bits. Add sugar and milk for a tasty breakfast porridge [msntongue]. I always bring a packet or two back with me.
