    Philadelphia Airport

We're flying from Orlando to Manchester via Philadelphia on US Airways.

Does anyone know if US Airways permit passengers to leave the airport? we have 8 hours to kill and it could be a good chance to see Philli.

My Nephew lives there and says the trains run from the airport to the city every half our and it is about a 20 minute journey, so we'd have plenty of time if:

    a) US Airways permit it
    b) We can check the luggage before we go

    Any advice appreciated!

There's no reason why you shouldn't leave the airport as you'll have passed through USA Immigration and Customs on your arrival. US Airways don't worry about where you are until it comes to boarding time!

You're normally able to just hand your cargo hold luggage back in as soon as you've cleared US Customs as it will have been checked through to Orlando and you will have your boarding passes, etc handed to you when you're at Manchester Airport.

Don't forget to leave time on your return to the airport for going through security checks prior to departure as there are sometimes long waits to do this.

    Chris,

Been there done that and would never do it again. I saw why my American aunt called it Filthydirtier rather than Philadelphia.

You can get a train from the airport that goes into the centre. I think it was about $20-25 per adult return.

This is the only american city I have ever been in where I felt uncomfortable and scared, somewhere I would never dream of walking anywhere by myself. But, if you've got 8 hours to wait (just as we did) you have to do something.

Just hope that when you get back to the airport the first thing you notice is that your flight has been cancelled - that's what happened to us. Our flight with US Airways to Gatwick had been chopped so we were put on a BA flight to Heathrow. Lovely, Heathrow is actually closer to home but horrors, the car was parked in Gatwick.

Not a lot of happy bunnies that day I can tell you, but hopefully your day will be a lot better.

    Hi Chris,
I have been to over 20 airports in USA and Philadelphia IS THE WORST BY A MILE. I will never, ever go there again. If it is still the same as in early May of this year you definately won,t have 8 hours to kill. Got fed up of counting the number of times USA citizens told us not to think all Americans were like the staff at Philly. We also had to wait 1 hour plus on the tarmac both going and coming home. US AIR itself was good.
I posted a topic around mid-May about our experience.

    Mike.

I would pick the Bronx. There is absolutely nothing to do in that airport for eight hours. If you are flying US, I think they checked our luggage through so that is not a problem.

Don,t know whether this is the correct topic to post this, but since it is about Philly airport I thought I may as well.
Some of you may remember our horrific experience at Philly airport. OB suggested I a letter to US AIR. The letter of one and a half pages was duly sent explaining evereything. A reply arrived this morning which was very apologetic but no mention of any plans to improve matters. The good side is that enclosed with the letter are travel vouchers to the value of $600. If we can get flights to Charlotte they will be very handy.

Glad you got a good response!

You won't forget to put my kick-back in the post will you

Actually I had a bit of good fortune the other day. I bought a jacket from a small outlet 55 miles from home. When I got it home-it had a security tag with dye in still attached. So I rang them the next day and asked what they were going to do about it. They told me they would send another one-and I could bin that one.
So the next day-my jacket arrived (very obligingly in a differnt colour!) Then on Saturday I took it with the receipt(to show it wasn't stolen) to the house of frazer where they have lots of different outlets. Lo and behold Morgan was able to remove it-so now I have two nice new jackets in different colours
