I would not have liked to be on that plane either, it does look very graceful though as it turns, in my opinion he did a good job of putting it right, at least he landed on the runway, imagine what the passengers were thinking as they came into land[:O][msneek][msnscared]

Kai-Tak eh, I know it well, went in there on the Conc and I was very naughty and stood up in the flight deck to get a good very view, it was fab!!!![clap][clap]

Used to love seeing the checkered board[msnwink]

It was a notorious airport though and BA did used to only let very experienced pilots do the landings normally the Captains[msnwink]

CDV - I would have loved that!!!!!

Kai Tak was one of the worse airports to land in. I belive BA only used to send their most experienced pilots on that route, that right Julie? At least this one landed on the runway and not in the SC Sea like some of them used to[msneek][msneek][msneek][msneek][msneek]

I did wonder if this one managed to stay on the runway though!!

I remember flying in there, so close to the buildings that you could almost see what the people were watching on their TVs!! One time we flew in, it was just after a hurricane, and it was still very, very windy. That was a scary one! [msneek][msneek]

You do not need to cross this of your list of places to go as the new airport has taken over the flights and you do not get to check out whats on the TV now.

Instead of lining the plane up with the runway several miles out and stabilising the approach as normal, the aircraft aims for a point just above the city (the "checkerboard") at an angle offset by something like 70 degrees from the normal approach path. At the checkerboard a tight right turn is initiated at a very low height (only several hundred feet) to line the aircraft up with the runway and land.

While you are turning at low level by the checkerboard there are mountains very close to your left that tower over you.

It's done this way as there are mountains on the normal straight in approach path and so it cannot be used.

Here is the old approach plate which shows it all (the checkerboard is just after where is says MM and the runway is just after that - note the 1523' just above this which is the height of the highest mountain just above the turn and the 390' which is the height of the tower blocks just under you):

It does look graceful but I wouldn't have wanted to be on board, might have put me off flying for good.[msnoo][msnsmile]
