    New Arrival

    [u]It's A Girl! Disney Celebrates Elephant Birth</u>

For the second time this holiday season, the Walt Disney World® Resort's Animal Care Team has helped deliver a female calf. On December 19, they welcomed a 233-pound bundle of joy – the first for elephant Donna! The female African elephant calf was born after 21 months in the womb and 16 minutes of labor! Mother and calf are doing well according to veterinarians and elephant managers, who are cautiously optimistic and describe the calf as "feisty and very active." Breeding African elephants in zoological settings is a challenging process with a high newborn mortality rate. This is the third African elephant born at Disney's Animal Kingdom.
