Depends on your dad, but it would be a good idea to get a HD ready telly.

High definition tv is the next generation of ultra high quality telly and so if they're not too much more expensive (and I don't think they are, then wht not?)

Then you just have to decide how big you want it and if you want flat screen, wide screen plasma and/or LED.[msnsmile2]

When our last TV finally gave up the ghost about 3 years ago I decided to go for a 37" plasma
and use a freeview + hard drive recorder unit with it. The picture is outstanding.
The price of both plasmas and LCD TVs has come down by leaps and bounds over the past two years
and you can now get 42" plasmas for under £900. When I got ours there were a lot of people
had strange ideas like "you have to renew the gas every so often" ???

If you look around now - plasmas have become the "norm" for advertising & information panels
in airports and shop windows and seem to cause no problems. Our local Makro has now sold all it's CRTVs off (cathode ray tube) and is completely stocked with plasmas and LCDs at great prices.

IMHO, I wouldn't go for top of the range because they are so overpriced, and will become so much cheaper in a few months's time. I know you don't want to buy in a few month's time, but just take a small step down the ladder and you will find a reasonably priced tv with a lot of up to date features. As far as HDTV is concerned, it will not be available on every channel or programme, but only on an extra subscription to Sky and only on some programmes (at least that is my understanding), so unless you are willing to pay the subscription it is a waste of time. By the time HDTV is universally available your new tv will be history!!

As a by the way, ALDI have an 80gb video recorder with Freeview for £100!!! This seems terrific value, considering the cheapest freeview set top box you can buy is about £30.

I take that back about HDTV. I just read an article that said that BBC have already broadcast Bleak House in HD, and will be producing more programmes next year, including a natural history programme and the world cup. So going by that I think it would be wise to get HDTV.
