We have done Universal on July 4th. Just before the fireworks it got too busy so we decided to head to the car and watch the fireworks from the roof of the car park.
It was an amazing view - and not at all crowded [msnsmile2]

I vote for the Kissimmee waterfront too. It's an event put on for locals by locals, so its not at all touristy but a chance to experience the real Floridian lifestyle. The fireworks were amazing and it was free, although I seem to remember they had charity collection buckets.
