If an item costs more than £145 then none of the item counts in your duty free allowance and you need to declare the whole item. You also can't 'share' the allowance around your party. But that does mean that you can bring other stuff back which is no more than £145 too!

It works out at about 22.5 percent we found when we bought some tools back. There are differing amounts of duty for different items.
If you do purchase one and you are likely to travel back and forth with it, make sure you get the receipt or Customs thing stamped with it so you dont have problems on future trips in case they assume you have bought it then.
As Blott says because you will be charged Duty on the whole value of the Apple, you will not have used your £145 Customs allowance so can bring in other items up to the £145 value.
Thanks i wondered if there was a scale of duties payable for different items.
I have looked on the customs website and cant find anything.
Cheers
Chris.

Hi, has anymore been said or done about this tax?
My brother is going to Ohio 17th Nov and was wandering about bringing chrismas pressies back.
Will the £145 limit affect him?
Thanks
vicky
Gordon Brown made a big thing last year of announcing trying to change it to £1000 per person but it still had to be ratified by all the members of the EEC and until they agree won't/can't be changed.
There was something about this in the pre budget report last week saying that Gordon Brown welcomed the decision of the EU to double the allowance but I can't find anything anywhere else to say that he has actually done it-Any experts know???
