    Laptop in case

I know the general consensus is going to be put the laptop in my hand luggage but this is kind of my back up, back up laptop so am not too worried about it.

I am going to bubble wrap it (and also wrap it in clothes) and put it in the suitcase for the hold. It's just one less thing to carry about.

Am I allowed to do this?
Are electrical items allowed to be packed in the hold luggage?

No problem with electrical goods in hold baggage, just make sure it is switched off!

The real danger you face is baggage handling, at least if you carry it with you you know it won't get damaged.

That's alright, I know it's a bigger risk in the hold but I feel lucky

Hold it is then, wrapped in buble wrap of course

We always carry ours onto the plane and they always insist on x-raying laptops indivdually when you go through security in the US but not in the UK.
From past experience laptops are sensitive and will get damaged at the slightest knock.

how about if you double wrap it in bubble wrap and put it in a very thick towel
and then use one of those vacumn bags to protect it even further

placed in the centre of the case with clothes all around it

we did this with a very expensive piece of venetian glass and it arrived undamaged

As far as I'm aware, you're not allowed to pack anything with a battery in your hold luggage? Best check with your airline I think to make sure?

Allways carried my Laptop as hand luggage. Have always had to take the laptop out of its case also when going through customs etc. Not sure out packing in your hold luggage, as Blott says Iwould check with your airline first.

I think putting it in your suitcase will almost guarantee that it is opened. Lots of them are xrayed before they go onto the plane, and something like that will stick out like a sore thumb.

We always take our laptop as hand luggage, having seen the state of some of the cases that come off the planes, wouldn't want to risk it getting damaged.[msnoo][msnsmile]

When I took one out in the summer as hand luggage I had to turn it on to prove it was real. Had to do the same for my PDA.
