    Getting someone on rollercoasters

Mel keeps telling me she is going to get on one next time we go, so in Jan this is the big moment.

How do you convince someone who is scared, that they are really good?

If not it looks like I am doing it all myself (unless we hook up with other owners who are there)

Mike and the children keep trying to convience me but they are wasting their time - I'm not a roller coaster person.

I did eventually go on The Tower of Terror in January this year after going to Florida at least once a year for the previous 12 years. I even got the photo to prove to Mike and the girls that I had actually done the ride hoping that when we all went out to the villa in August they wouldn't hassle me.

I did do the ride again in August with them all and we have a great family photo to prove it[msnsmile2].

I think their next aim is to get me to go on Kraken but they will be waiting a very, very, very long time for that one[msnwink][msnwink]

You are never going to convince them. Speaking as one terrified Mother as far as rollercoasters go it is never going to happen. Lee and the Boys can tell me as ofton as they like how great a ride is but I will have too much time in the queue reading all the " Do not ride if...." signs to build myself up into such a panic that I will duck out again and again and never ride.

In the dim and distant past I did (under pressure ) ride space mountain at MK with hubby (although he was only boyfriend then [msnwink]) and after I had screamed myself stupid and nearly fainted from terror as we disembarked he has never pressurised me to such the same extent again [msnsad]

Just leave your girls to it - you never know, if there is no queue and they can just run straight on before they have time to think you may be lucky [msnwink]

I don't do the roller coasters, but the first time we went I did go on Kraken[msneek]

Never again, I know I had made a mistake half way up the climb and wanted to get off, thought I was going to die.

I only went on because everyone kept on about how good they were, even my youngest who was 7 at the time loved them. My husband and 3 girls can't get enough of them so I thought maybe I will like it and am missing out. I proved to them and myself that I do not like them.

I think I am brave going on Jurassic Park River Aadvenure, that to me is so scary but I do like it.

If you want someone to go on with you I have 3 children I go lend you

OUr two sons are complete opposites, the eldest is a rollercoaster nut and goes on anything, the youngest won't go on anything, no matter how hard we try and convince him.[msnoo][msnsmile]

Speaking as a hater of white-knuckle roller coasters myself, I can say that the decision to go on one has to come from the person themselves! No-one will ever convince me that I will love it if only I'd have a go..... Having said that, I finally managed to get on Big Thunder Mountain several years ago, and spent the first trip on it with my eyes shut!! I somehow managed to drag myself back onto it for a second turn, kept my eyes open and haven't looked back since!! It is now one of my favourite rides. However, I tried Space Mountain another time and felt so ill, during and after it, that I'll never go on it again. I know I was proved wrong with Big Thunder Mountain, but Space Mountain was a completely different kettle of fish.

I wouldn't worry too much about trying to persuade someone to go on the roller coasters - it's useful to have someone to hold the bags and coats!! [msnsmile2]

If somebody wants to try a coaster for the first time I would recommend rock n roller coaster at MGM, it's in the dark so you don't get the full sensation of height, the restraints come down over your shoulders so you 'feel' very secure in the seat (unlike space mountain), also you're in a car so your legs aren't dangling.

It can be a dreadful experience not only for the person who does not like coasters but also for the rest of the group. In our family the boys and myself like them but not my husband. A few years ago we were at Alton Towers with Stuart's mother when Robert and I decided to go on the Runaway Mine Train. Stuart's mother thought she would give it a try never having been on one before (at the time she was already in her 80's) and so Stuart got cajoled into going on by his mother. Before we were even out of the station he was complaining loudly he did not like it. Stuart absolutely hated it and Robert was so ashamed of his father's behaviour that he has never asked him to ride a coaster since. It is something you either like or you don't. Stuart detests them (unfortunately) and nothing will ever make him change his mind. His mother did enjoy the ride.

Persuaded my Mum to go on Test Track at EPCOT last year thinking that would be an easy introduction. A few tests then the outdoor race around the building being not too much more than a ride in a fast convertible car. I was wrong, we went outside and she was saying 'I'm going to be sick, I'm going to be sick', luckily for the family behnd she didn't!!
    Didn't ask her after that.

I also convinced her once before, admittedly by playing the experience down, to go on Space Mountain in Disneyland Paris too thinking it would be fairly tame like MK. As anyone who has been on both knows, the DLP Space Mountain is a lot better and white knuckle than the Flordian one....eeekkk, thought she was going to pass out...my bad.

I really would take the advice of not making someone go on who doesn't want to.

Now this trip my eldest is tall enough for all of them bar the real biggies (Rock n Rollercoaster for example) and says she wants to do Mission Space and Space Mountain. In her case I think I will let her come on with me if she wants. The only downside is that the youngest monster, who is a little daredevil, will be upset that she can't join her sister...
