I do have a tri band phone, and found the 0044.com sim card to be reasonable cost, and I just pop into my phone when I arrive in the US. (www.0044.com)

Why not just buy a phone card and use public phones, I know this means you cant be contacted but unless its an emergency is that a problem?
Most (all) villas have phones and again a phone card is the cheapest way and you can give your family in the uk the number so they can phone you.
I wouldn't worry about a getting a phone over there, upgrade your existing but again watch the costs, you pay to make and receive calls abroad

We have a tri-band phone that we use all over the world and it is great for quick calls or indeed texting. We also use phonecards in the villa and find this a much cheaper option than offering the free-phonecall service to our guests. Our guests don't seem to mind buying phonecards. For longer calls whilst we are in the villa we use Skype on the computer which is totally free when calling another Skype user but the calls to a landline or mobile anywhere in the world through Skype are very cheap too.
