It's strange, I don't understand why the British don't tip properly. Just a cultural thing I suppose. I know it's been discussed before, but having just come back, I'm still smarting a bit from the attitude of some of the servers.

As soon as they hear the British accent, they go OTT in pointing out service is not included, or occasionally (as in Key W Kools last week), automatically put a service charge on the bill.

It really bugged me. I do tip; I tip properly and very generously if the server has been helpful, but once or twice this time, I knocked a couple of dollars off because of the forceful reminder.

It was especially obvious any time we went to a restaurant on I- Drive - I assume that's where most of the Brits hang out.

The best one I've seen is a Server at TGI's who puts a picture of her little girl in the wallet she brings the Bill in, along with a note that she works for tips & only tips. Basically she's saying "If you don't tip, how am I supposed to look after my child"!!

I couldn't agree more. We always tip properly and as you say genrously if we have had good service and a helpful/friendly server. I always tip in cash even when I use my credit card as I have been told the servers much prefer this as they don't have to wait for their money. So it really ticks me off when they "forcefully" remind me. I also find it is usually the least helpful and most miserable servers that do this.

It makes me feel like saying "maybe people don't tip you because you are not very good at your job, not because they are british" [msnmad]

We have never ever had someone tell us we need to tip. Generally the waiters are better in the US and I don't think tipping them is a prob.

i dont wanna tip now!, my husband works very hard for our once a year holiday and i begrudge being TOLD to tip and how much! if people are pleasant to us and do their jobs properly then we will leave a good tip! and i prefer to leave what WE think is reasonable for a good service!!

Second that. i have been to a few places where the service has been second rate and then been scowled(sp) at when we leave a second rate tip.

I do tip here in the UK but only if i have had good service. In the US it is expected even if the service/meal is poor. Also the they expect more like 15-20% in the US ,where as we work on about 10%.
I am told the servers in the US are badly paid and make most of their living from tips.
