My next door neighbour who is New Yorker always says you tip cos you get good service not cos they tell you have to tip.

His tip is, if its good then tip double the tax on your bill

I used to say that when I lived in NY and the tax was 8 1/4%. But the tax rate is different in each state....Florida is 7%, Connecticut is 6%, Delaware doesn't even have sales tax. So not a hard and fast rule.

    I aggree George,

I worked all my life in the U.K. and France and I was expected to do a good job whatever it was, and no body ever gave me a tip for doing a good job, but if I mucked something up I got a row and rightly so. I get tired of Brit bashing but we have put a lot into the Florida ecenomy. Maybe some of the workers should join a decent union to get them a good hourly rate instead of moaning about the people provide the money to pay them. I for one would prefer to pay 15% extra if it went to the servers and not get the snide comments or dirty looks.

Jeff & Amy, I disagree with you. Infact I think American's are terrible at tipping. Ask my niece! The great land of opportunity and they can't pay their waiting staff a decent basic wage??

It's the way it's been done here for ever. The employers know the staff will get tips. But the tips are not all theirs. They have to give a certain a percentage to the bar staff. So a 15% tip may only net the server 10%.
I know it's a strange way to treat staff. But it's all above board and legal. We have a minimum wage here of around $5.25 an hour. Servers are exempt from this and they make up their salary through tips. There are some servers that work for tips only. So, cut them a break. At least you have a choice. In the UK the tip is usually included in the bill. Good service or bad.

Excuse me, the tip is not included in the bill in the UK. I don't see our servers get the hump on when they get a small tip or not. Remember, our servers in the UK don't get a good hourly rate either, but we wouldn't do what the americans have done and automatically add it on to the final bill.
I stand by what I said earlier and it annoys me when you bash the UK people for not tipping, so no, I won't cut them a break.

Stephen, a service charge is added to many bills of generally 6-8 or more people at a table in the UK. But having said that it is still your right to have this removed if you think it is not deserved. As far as i am concerned it is very similar here in the UK as it is in the USA. I have been tipping here in the UK many years before i visited the USA,so i dont think it is just an American custom. If a job has been well done then its worthy of a tip.

Well said Dave. If the service is good, then tip. If it's poor. don't.

Whilst I think the expected 15-20% is high, is it not a case of ‘When in Rome’. That said I sometimes baulk at giving that level of tip when we have had several bottles of very expensive wine – when there is just as much work involved in serving cheap ‘plonk.’

For those who feel it necessary to make comparisons with UK, you might like to think how many British restaurants serve free iced filtered water constantly, or charge no extra for topping up soda/coke etc & coffee without charge.

I'm not bashing anyone. Just trying to make the point. It's accepted that US servers get a 10%-15% tip for their service. If the service is bad, screw 'em! It it's good go to 20%.
I'm a pilot. I work with many flight attendants who work as servers on their off days. Some at the WDW parks. Many at places like Chilis and TGIF. They hear my London accent and often comment on Brits who walk out without leaving any tip. Germans, aparently, are just the same!

When I lived in the UK, in the 70s and the early 80s, service charges were included most of the time. I know the UK has changed 10,000% since I left. So I take back what I said about service being included there.
