We bought a guitar last year and we flew home with Virgin, they put it in the hold with the suitcases, no problems. In fact it was purcased at Disney Downtown in the guitar shop as we were waiting to check in, my son's mate had asked one of the hostesses when we first arrived that morning to see if this was ok and she had said to go ahead.

We bought our boy a Banjo and we travelled home with Delta via Atlanta. We tried to take it on as hand luggage on the orlando - atlanta, but it got taken off him at the door and a receipt given, much like a pushchair/stroller. Then just wait at the door when we arrived at atlanta for pick up. The atlanta - gatwick leg was not a problem, he was allowed to take it on as hand luggage. We bought his from the new guitar shop on Orange Blossom Trail. Very good deal compared to the UK, and as we bought a case, they did knock a bit more off.

What did you do at customs the other end?? The guitar shop on OBT is where my hubby has seen one, however it will be more than the 145 allowed??

They waved him through customs, to be honest I never gave it a thought, not sure how much it cost either.

My son saw the exact guitar he had just purchased in the UK in the shop by Virgin at Downtown Disney. Big shock on price as it was almost twice the cost of the UK one for the same model.

Moral of story is check the price of want you want before you go as not everything is cheaper. I would guess that the shops on OBT may be a better deal.

My eldest son brought his guitar out to Florida on Virgin a 2 years ago and took it on board instead of hand luggage with out any probs at all[msnwink] You can take most things in the hold as part of your baggage allowance providing the items are not dangerous in any way[msnwink]

I would say don't get it shipped if you can help it. Or if you have to, Ship it yourself and put a small value on it, or goods that are not new but returning to the UK, as this way they will not charge you excise duty on it. We made the mistake of having some goods shipped to the UK and the store said they ship internationally and only a couple of days ago Hubby returning to the UK from Florida to find a message that the post office wanted £25 for goods we paid $150 for.

Will definetely bring them home with us of ship to the UK myself with zero value

I don't mind bringing it back I just wondered if we go through the red channel how much it would cost to pay duty on it.
