Air France A340 crashed @ Toronto

Around 200 passengers are trapped on board a plane which has skidded of a runway in Canada and burst into flames.

The plane, an Air France jet, crashed into a ravine after apparently careering off the end of a runway at Toronto's Pearson Airport.

Huge plumes of smoke billowed from the plane, which was engulfed in flames on the edge of Canada's busiest motorway.

Emergency crews on the scene poured jets of water on to the flames, assisted by rains.

Witnesses said the plane may have been hit by lighting.

The plane was at the end of its flight from the French capital Paris to Toronto when it crashed; witness said it had been hit by lighting.

There was no immediate word on any injuries or deaths.

Live ATC from Toronto Approach at the time of the accident at http://www.liveatc.net/.archive/cyyz...02-05-1530.mp3

You can hear AF358 Heavy on frequency about 80% of the way through it.

The next archive has the controller saying "aircraft slid off the end of the runway, airport may be closed for a while, you may want to go to your alternate".

Some reports are saying all passengers and crew escaped. Praying this is so.

The crew did very well to get everyone off the aircraft. Crew are trained to evacuate a full aircraft within 90 seconds. I flew continually for 21 years and never had to evacuate an aircraft. These events are thankfully few and far between.
I'm more scared driving on the M6 or M25 than flying.

Crew did an amazing job getting everyone out OK, I have been in an evacuation myself during my 21 years of flying with BA, and its a great feeling to get everyone out.

    God bless them all.

P.S Next time you fly pay special attention to the safety demo - it saves lives!

Great news that everyone got out safely, well done to the staff, it must be awful having to put that training into practice.
