    DVD de-coder

I really need help I have been given a laptop today (for work) not new - and they tell me it plays DVDs but when I put one in it asks if I want to play it through windows media player, if I click yes then a box comes up telling me that a DVD de-coder is not installed!!
Does anyone know of a program I can download to play DVDs - genuine and others!!

    Thanks

I don't think that Windows media player will play DVD's. You need a software programme that is specifically designed to play the discs. Power DVD comes to mind and that's what I use. There are quite a few DVD player software programmes on the market, some free to download. I can't help about the region codes, some can be changed in software but I'm not an expert in that field.. Try a Google search for DVD players and see what comes up. I'm sure that you will need a dedicated DVD software player.

you need something like Power DVD or similar

Do a google for it and you should be able to download a 30 day trial copy and then if you like it update or buy it in the sops etc

You may want to try this link, the forum on there is all about DVD copiers and players etc.
If you post the question on there i'm sure they will help, they helped me with region coding.

Do you have the latest version of windows media player installed? version 10? that may be the way around it. As technology improves the way in which films for instance are recorded onto dvd's cd's etc is changed. And of course legacy (aka old) programs cannot handle 'em.

There is a program called DVDregionfree. It does what it says and removes the region restriction on 99% of computer DVD drives. You can then use any player like PowerDVD to play disc's from any region.
