    I think you'd find this is actually illegal in the UK so he should get a new one ASAP as Dave quite correctly points out.

    I believe you have 30 days in which to notify DVLC of your change of address.

    After that, it is illegal.

    I would suggest having a photo driving license. My husband has one and uses it without any difficulty when making car hire arrangemens and when ID is required. Some stores will now ask for your ID up to the age 40 !!! This takes the legal age limit of 21 a bit far, but they could lose their license if found to be serving alcohol to anyone under the age of 21. By having a photo ID, you don't have to carry your passport.

    Many restaurants will ask for your photo ID. My daughter, aged 25, was asked for a photo ID when entering the Disney's Boardwalk Nightclub and wasn't allowed in with only a paper license. Hard lesson learned. It is much safer to carry your photo ID and keep your passport safe.

    If there are very old driving offences on the pink paper licence will this affect the car hire or anything else for that matter?

    Also do you have to get this International Driver's Permit from the AA that I have read about?
