I always try and make eye contact with the people behind when we are boarding, this usually results in a brief but friendly conversation. This seems to break the ice and form a sort of relationship. I also never recline my seat without asking and on dozens of transatlantic flights no-one has ever been awkward about me reclining. I hate to say it but it seems that bad language and improper behaviour seems to be a trait of charter flights... that's why we usually fly scheduled although we did fly charter last month, when we were flying out over the east coast of Florida, near Jacksonville, the idiot behind was telling his children that we were flying over Miami beach! He also commented several times on the flight that he would smack his children (About 5 and 7 years old) in the mouth if they didn't shut up.. charming.
