    Cockatiel

We have a cockatiel staying with us.He is a nervous bird anyway, but now he is totally freaked out.He has a nervous breakdown if a siren goes, applause on the telly (Wimbledon!) or many other things and screeches and hisses(I didn't know birds could hiss

Anyone have any experience of these birds. He calms down if you sit and blink at him,but I do have other things to do.He is 9 months old

oh bless him, why not ring animal welfare and ask if there are any specialist around that deal with cockatiels
do you not have a quiet room at the back of the house you can put him in and bring him back out gently?
or try tapping in on google about cockatiels

He hisses all the time in the quiet room,Liesa. I have bought a book that is not very helpful.I will try googling, but they always say that the advice can be suspect

What happens if you cover him up when he's making a noise? Does he stop or continue?

Although the fact that he stops when you are with him may mean that he's lonely and needs some distractions. Parrots, etc love wooden cotton reels to play with (but they're a bit hard to find these days) but something wooden and not painted that's relatively small so that he can hold onto it might be ideal.

Thanks,Blott, believe it or not I had some wooden cotton reels (shows how much sewing I do.Since he is frightened of the bottom of the cage I have suspended it over his favourite perch. At the moment he has flattened himself in the corner but I am hoping he will get brave and play with it.When you cover him up he hisses for a while and then goes to sleep. He does like me singing to him,but nobody else appreciats it!

Liesa, No he is not mine.He belongs to a house guest who had a fire and has moved in til he finds accommodation. He is at work most of the time (the guest not the bird) I appreciate your suggestions and concern, I have had less bother with babies.

is this cockatiel like this with the owner??? maybe he is in shock from the fire, must've been very traumatic for him!!
i would probably be as traumatised as him if i were in a housefire!!

good luck with him, and keep us up todate about him please?

We had a amazon parrot for years hand reared by my husband he chattered away all day sit on our hand, watch the tele
Could mimic everyone including the dogs next door sing along with all the soap tunes
We never closed Percy's cage door he would wander in and out sit on the windowsill, watch the world go by
when he was 8 years old. we moved house his routine changed from day one he was sad went quiet would'nt eat
We tried everything took him to the vets he told us he was suffering from depression due to moving house
Not long after he started to pull his feather's out had bald patches everywhere what a pathetic parrot he looked
I had to do something ,I went to see the family who had bought our house and asked them if they wanted to take Percy
They said would give it a try it didnt work, he was OK with the house but he was nasty to them pecked them when ever he could hissed and squacked all night
In the end I took him to a bird sanctuary we visited a few times but he wouldn't have anything to do with us

I will speak with two Cousins of Brian's, one who had a Cockatiel for years, the other still has one so she may be able to help.
