    Insects

    Hi all.

As you know I will be visiting Orlando towards the end of July and I was just wondering what kind of insects will we be contending with at this time of year.

    Thanks, Adam.

    Errrrr.... large ones, that bite!
Fire Ants, Palmetto Bugs (Roaches), Mozzies, Spiders, Wasps, Hornets......
Nice thing is we have Snakes and Lizards that eat most of the smaller insects. Most places spray for roaches.
    Enjoy the Sub Tropics!

My son went upstairs to draw the curtains and came down saying a alligator had fallen on his hand,we didnt beleive him at first until we saw it running across the floor, the reception staff just said it would be okay as they eat smaller insects but i didnt fancy it running over me in the night[msneek]

My family will not let me have any snakes or lizards.....so FL is a great place for me having them in the garden....

It is a sub tropical climet so at certain times of the year you must expect bugs etc. However it is nowhere as bad as this thread suggests. All homes are treated regulary for the prevention of bugs and this normally keeps homes clear of them. Remember keep the doors shut, this also nesessary for the air conditioning, and do not leave bits of food around. If food is left in the screened pool enclosure then the ants will find it.
As for mosquitos these do gather around water at dusk. This should not worry you unless you are going to somewhere like Epcot the watch the fireworks. It is then a good idear to protect yourselves with an insect repellant such as ' Cutter'. Cutter is a very good repellant and is available in the Outdoors and Hunting department at Walmart.
We go to Florida on a regular basis and we do not have any problems. Enjoy the holiday and do not worry unduly about bugs.

What Rachel & Nigel said is 100% right, you would be lucky/unlucky (depending on what way you look at it) to find anything inside a home. Ours, like everybodys, is treated each year. Outside is no different from being anywhere in the 'Med' really, worst problem is mozzies if they affect you. I am OK but my wife attracts them so she just sprays herself before we go out anywhere in the evenings.

My cousin tells me that if you take odourless garlic tablets for about 3 months before you go, and whilst you are out there, the mozzies avoid you. She swears by them.

Watch for large Roaches when you are watching the fireworks at Epcot. Thay tend to gather in the corners of the walls by the lake. They're totally harmless, but can make you jump when you first see them.
Your house/condo should be clear of bugs. If you see a mound on the edge of the grass leave it alone. It's a fire ant nest. We have them all over Florida.
Don't go walking in the bush, or the everglades without some sort of protection. The Chiggers will eat you alive! My 13 year old was bitten last year on a school trip, and he got bit on his... ahem.... nads! We really did try not to laugh!
