My degree is in Mathematics and I recall one of the courses I really enjoyed was Bayesian Statistics in the second year. We had such an enthusiastic lecturer and I got very involved in the topic as I was fascinated with it and the real life applications of it.

For the techies out there, and I guess the non techies too, there is a very well written paper about Bayesian filtering at http://www.paulgraham.com/spam.html

I do like the technical elegance of this appraoch to beating spam, but if it were left to me I think I'd just hang them instead. Bring back the gallows and have a public flogging and hanging every weekend.

I have noticed a real increase in the last few months and also noticed that my Freeserve account which had been changed to log onto pop.wanadoo now says pop.norton but it has made the problem much worse.

I can't count the number of emails I get promising to enlarge bits of anatomy that I don't have

Yes i had forgotten about the mortgage offer one aswell.

I thought i read somewhere that there was supposed to be new legislation in place to stop unsolicited emails or spam from been sent, did i really read this or did i wishfully think it??

Is there no way we can identify the true sender, rather than the bogus address they use, and then everybody send them something and hopefully jam up there server[}], a bit like spammimg the spammer.

Don't be tempted to spam the spammers. You could be identified as a spammer yourself, then all your replies to enquiries would be blocked by ISP spam filters!!

Unfortunately, most spam originates outside the shore of the UK or USA and so is not covered by latest legislation. At least governments are working on addressing the problem.

If you want to identify the real sender, use the 'view long headers' option in your e-mail program. You will see often that alough there is a 'title' from where the spam is alleged to have originated from, there is an IP address in square brackets immediately after - like [82.123.5.43]. You can do a whois search to find out the origin of the e-mail, but so many times these are just innocent machines which have been hijacked by spammers, because the owners did not use up to date anti-virus or anit-spamware programmes.

Me too also, what I want to know is who told them [msneek][msnwink]

On a more serious note, there seems to be very little that we can do to stop them. Not only do they hijack machines to relay the spam, they spoof legit addresses too. I regularly receive mail from ME offering mortgages, enlargements, and cheap Rolexes etc. [msnsad]

I'm a Mac user. I use the Mac Mail program. It has a great spam filter. I think I get around 2-3 a week now compared with aqround 50 a week when I used Netscape.
