Reference the companion ticket , we have given ours to a couple of renters flying out tommorrow as we couldn't use it in the time frame. They are flying Premium Economy for £550-00 each.
We have used miles to get a free companion ticket in the past and again with Premium Economy as this makes the saving worth while.

There was an article in the newspapers some while ago about the Frequent Flyer schemes for most of the airlines being of little use to the holidaymaker who wants to fly with family; and hence Billions of miles are unclaimed.

Note I said little use - not of no use! However there are so many restrictions on obtaining flights(when you want them)using miles and other difficulties as outlined above.

The big advantages are for those who fly often enough each year to obtain 'elite status'. - preference for seats, booking in procedure and priority for upgrades.

I suppose in defence of the airlines it depends on what constitutes a 'frequent flyer'.

We have earnt enough miles for 2 free family trips over the years, and even though we went in Aug to LA, a couple of years ago we had no trouble with availability. As in all these schemes sometimes you can benefit and sometimes not.

There was a list someone posted recently showing the various different codes (which seem to be fairly standard across the airlines from those I've seen).

I have until this year booked my flights with a broker and always received my airmiles. This year I have used my airmiles and bought tickets direct from virgin using miles plus money, my flights cost £274 each, for all 8 of us. Well worth being a flying club member I believe.

Andrew, do they notify you if you have qualified for the free companion ticket by spending 15k on the credit card, or do you have to tell them?

I'm pretty sure I have spent that amount and then some this year [msnscared]

I think it may be only if you pay the £80 a year.
If so they will send you a letter and it will be on your Flying Club statement but only once the year is up; if you spend the £15000 in say the first 6 months you will still only be credited after the 12 months.
Katy and myself have a card each to get round this and as soon as one hits the £15000 then we use the 2nd one.
    hope this helps

I used 30,000 air miles this year and got upgraded to Premium economy for £74.20 instead of £1172.30.
