When is a Window seat not a Window seat?

On My Last Trip To Orlando Just Over A Couple Of Weeks Ago I Had Booked My Flight With Continental,Although The First Leg To New York Was Operated By Virgin.

Anyway,I Chose My Seats On Their Website And Was Indeed Assigned Those Very Seats On Each Flight.

I Always Either Sit By The Window Or In An Aisle Seat If Possible,And Thats What I Had Planned To Do This Time As I Have Done Many Times In The Past With No Problems.

On Both The Virgin Flights From Heathrow To New York And Back I Had Picked A 'J' Seat Which Is Next To The Window On The Right Hand Side As You Look From The Rear Of The Plane.

So When I Boarded The Plane For My First Flight And Went To Find My Seat,I Was Amazed To Find That My 'J' Seat Was In The Middle And Not By The Window As Illustrated On The Company's Website.

Anyway,After Checking The Numbers It Turns Out That For What Ever Reason On This Virgin Plane The Seat Numbers Are As Follows...

    A,B,C D,E,F,G H,J,K

Seems There Are No 'I' Seats Meaning Of Course That 'K' And Not 'J' Now Becomes The Window Seat[msnoo]

I Did Ask A Steward The Reason For This But Alas,She Had No Idea And I Made No Fuss About It But Was Just Surprised As I Had Never Seen This Before.

On The Return Leg With Virgin From New York I Once Again Had A 'J' Seat Assigned And Low And Behold This Time It Was Indeed Next To The Window,So I Guess There Is A Reason For This,But I Have To Yet Work It Out.

    John.

A window seat's not a window seat when it hasn't got a window! I've been caught out a couple of times with this (we never fly Virgin or Continental any more - long story) as, although the seat is next to the plane 'wall' there's a blank space where a window should be! Now I always ask for a window seat with a window please! Get some funny looks from check-in staff but rather that than end up looking at a blank wall for 9 hours!

Sometimes if they change planes 'for operational reasons' as they say, then you do get a different seat configuration. My advice is always to double check at the check-in desk to find out if the seat you booked previously has the correct attributes!

    Sounds confusing!

We did the online thing and ended up in the centre going out, not what we have picked!
    Wasn't happy!

Coming back, we got exactly what we wanted!!

May take my own window next time!!

Wasn't because they switched planes on you? We've had that, pre selected seats on a 767, ended up flying on a 777, our original seats would#ve left us without a window, but as we always het to the airport early we got this sorted.
