These codes are useful when you are looking to upgrade your ticket or if you will receive airmile privalages.
Obviously if you are on a discounted economy ticket, say 'L' or 'Q' then the chances of receiving an upgrade over a 'Y' or 'H' fare is extremely unlikely.
With regards to upgrading your ticket yourself, miles can only be used if your ticket is at the full fare, IE 'Y' in economy or 'W/S' in PE. If you are looking to pay at the ticket desk on the day of departure for an upgrade, then the cost of the upgrade will depend on the Fare type of your ticket.
Airline ticketing can be very confusing.

We had Q class in March Matt and were lucky enough to get upgraded.
I have heard that some have been changed recently and Q is one that is now different but can't remember what the agent said it now was.
