My mother in law posts bisto gravy over to us..she puts gravy on the picket so they can stop it if need be...but as Esprit knows I'm always swimming in the stuff and have to pass a lot of it on ...she did bring some in by plane last time and was told not to do it again.... they let her keep it......I don't think its wise to do it....

Sorry Elaine but I'm going to be serious again...

The USA, whether wisely or unwisely I don't know as I'm no expert, had a ban on importing meat, dairy products (and fruit plus some other food products) long before the BSE outbreak we had in the UK. I don't blame them from wanting to keep that out, having seen the results here, nor would anyone else. Perhaps if the UK had been stricter with our regulations, we wouldn't have had the outbreak in the first place, I don't know.

If you want to not declare food items which should be declared on your Customs form, that's up to you. But Caroline is right that we can't condone this on the forum or suggest that what you've said is in any way official or correct because it's not. All visitors to the USA should follow the importation regulations and delcare food items as well as comply with any other USA regulations.

    Ingredients in BISTO
    Potato Starch,Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil,Maltodextrin,Salt,Wheat Flour,Colour (E150c),Flavourings,Flavour Enhancers (E621, E635),Emulsifier (E322),Spice & Herb Extracts,Onion Extract.

FROM THE US DEPARTMENT OF STATE

    Food Products (Prepared)
You may bring bakery items and certain cheeses into the United States. The APHIS web site features a Travelers Tips section and Game and Hunting Trophies section that offers extensive information about bringing food and other products into the country. Many prepared foods are admissible. However, almost anything containing meat products, such as bouillon, soup mixes, etc., is not admissible. As a general rule, condiments, vinegars, oils, packaged spices, honey, coffee and tea are admissible. Because rice can often harbor insects, it is best to avoid bringing it into the United States.

THERE ARE NO MEAT PRODUCTS IN BISTO AND IT IS NOT BOUILLON OR A SOUP MIX THAT CONTAINS MEAT PRODUCTS. SO THIS IS NOT ILLEGAL.

GOSH YOU WOULD THINK I WAS ASKING FOR DRUGS, THEN I WOULD UNDERSTAND THAT IT WOULD BE ILLEGAL. COME ON CAROLINE - THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A LIGHT HEARTED SHOPPING LIST FULL OF MY WISHES. I AM SORRY THAT PEOPLE TAKE THINGS SO SERIOUSLY.

Having read the ingredients, I'm mighty glad I don't use the products in the UK nevermind taking them into the US[sick]

Elaine, I like a giggle as much as the next person and I'm sorry if you disagree with me, but this forum provides advice to holidaymakers going to Florida - it would be pretty stupid if we didn't make it clear that it is illegal to take certain foodstuffs into the US.

Like Blott, I've taken plenty of products into the US for friends that now live in Florida, but would nver knowingly take something on the banned list. I took jars of mincemeat for Julie to make her mince pies at Christmas (no meat whatsoever in them) but they were confiscated at Washington, I certainly wasn't going to risk an argument with him over whether or not it was allowed. But I suspect it was the fruit he objected to.

Does everybody list the food items they take on the Customs Form?

I was taking goodies for our American neighbours - chocolate, tea bags and biscuits - I wanted to do everything right so I checked the box that asked if I had food but didn't see where to list what the items were.

Customs just waved us through at Orlando without even asking what we had.

Providing the customs staff take a sensible approach then I don't see anybody being locked up and deported! The fact that there is a regulation in place doesn't necessarily mean that it will always be enforced.

I would personally support confiscation of significant amounts of the foodstuffs mentioned here but the to make an issue of the constituents of an odd stock cube on anybody's part is a bit daft.

You should tick the box on the form Tracey (which you did) and normally you get asked what you have (sample form here http://www.orlando-guide.info/forums/topic_14977.asp). Don't forget they also have those cute sniffer dogs so chocolate, T-bags and biscuits might not be on his 'great smells' list!
