Well it sounds like we have the capital to put down. I am currently undertaking my learning disability training. I started in January 05 finish in 08. I am seriously thinking of not persuing this career as our plans are to move to America, and this qualification is not recognised. Don't want to waste three years of hard slog, if i can not practice out there and also be recognised as a professional. I think we will invest in a business and try to do it through the E2 route.
I know this is very stressfull, having to re apply every five years for your visa. We have family out there doing just that. Can you apply for a green card if you expand your business out there? We would also get a broker to find a well established business, stll probably very stressfull, but i suppose you would have to come back to England and start again. We are both young enough to give it a good go i think.
Just another quick question, My husband and i were wondering if you just automatically think in dollars or do you convert it back in to pounds sterling when you live out there. We were thinking it would be hard to think in dollars at first!!

Hi Claire..it's me ! On your question about thinking in dollars, to begin with you convert everything back to pounds, then you get to the point where you think just in Dollars. when I went back to England last time and was shopping, I found myself converting the price in pounds back to dollars !

You have to think in $$$ if you are paid in $$$......we look on a $ being a pound...things don't look so cheap that way.....but it is the best way.....

I would agree Chrizzy, we think in dollars because we earn dollars. And we think of a dollar as a pound.
Building the business up big enough to get a green card? No there is no direct route. If you are doing something specialist where there is a shortage, you can try the labour certification route and convert to a work based visa, or you could sell a big business and invest $500,000 in a business in an area of low employment ot $1 million elsewhere and try and get an EB5 that leads to green card, though that is also a hard route. Or a spouse could go in as dependant, apply for an EAD, get a job, then hassle the employer to sponsor him or her to change status to H1b.
