Did you see the report in the Mail on Saturday. It was regarding Disney Tickets. It claimed that thebEnglish have to pay more for them than anyone else and all th enew ticket types were not available to the English.
Maybe Martin should get in touch with them and let them know that he sells all the types of tickets and as you pay in dolars no matter what country you live in, you all pay the same.

I would heartily agree that prices should be reduced during the school holiday periods . Question is how the travel / airline companies would implement it. Presumably the cost of airfares out of school holiday seasons would rocket to balance the reductions? (the shortfall would have to be made up somehow! [msnsad])

Whatever they do, I hope they do not increase the passenger density of the aircraft. The planes are crowded as it is.

Are individual airlines allowed to seasonally reduce passenger luggage allowances? If so, that is another area they might look at - levy excess luggage charges on people travelling heavy - which a lot of us do to the USA, especially Florida. So, it they reduce the allowance to - say - 23Kg at peak seasons, they might partly make up the shortfall.

The boys have just bought home some info on this. Our Local Education Authority (Wiltshire) has signed up for the discount scheme. The abridged version for 2005 is as follows:
Your LEA has linked up with the following companies:Virgin Holidays, Airtours, Thompson and Skytours,Thomas Cook, First Choice and Kuoni to offer you discounted offers for hols booked between 1/03/2005-31/03/05.
These are the following offers: Virgin Holidays: Florida & California discounted by £400 per booking plus $100 free disney dollars(!)Carribean 1st child free for dates 13/07/05-21/08/05. Direct bookings only.

First Choice: £50 off all bookings where 1 child £75 off 2 children. Florida Holidays £100 discount.

Thomas Cook Guaranteed free places at SELECTED hotels and appartments in the JMC group.

Airtours: 5% discount in addition to any other offer running at the time from all Airtours and Aspro brochures.

Kuoni: Free child at Coral Strand Mauritius. Not sure about the rest of the offer.

So yes the travel companies are giving discounts but there some loads of strings attached.

Also here are the guidelines that Wiltshire LEA for hols in termtime.

Only schools can authorise pupil absence for family hols.

By law, schools may grant up to ten school days absence but do not have to.

Parents must request permission and make an application to the school

The school will consider every application on individual circumstances

If your school says no to your application, this will count as unauthorised absence.

The boys have their unauthorised absence approved. But with the normal displeasure.
It will probably be best for all parents to check with their own individual LEA.
I have never sent such a long post and now my wrists ache.

Hardly any discount!!!I've saved over £1,000 by booking villa, flights and car separately rather than a travel agent package deal!!!

We have always had the boys absences approved no problem, but they have a new headmaster this year so will be interesting.

The last headmaster joked he could be bribed with a fridge magnet, so we obliged!!!

those reductions don't go far enough, I went last october, we were charged £2300 , if we'd gone a couple of weeks either side of school hols we could have saved over £800

As long as they keep filing the planes in the busy periods I very much doubt they will reduce prices.

My daughter will miss 7 days in June because we fly out June 22th .If I left it any later to fly I would end up payiny 250 euros per person more in fares , there are 6 of us flying , 5 adults so I shall risk the wrath of the dept. of education and go to Florida or keep to the rules and stay home. Anyway I firmly believe travel is a terrific form of education for a child. One day in Epcot or the Kennedy spacecentre surely makes up for the days lost in school.

I agree, Olive, that there is more to education than just what we learn at school. Our children saw so much on their travels with us that could never have been learned from a book or a computer.

Of course, children should not spend long periods of time away from school, but there is a happy medium.

Hope your daughter enjoys her trip to Florida in June. Am sure she will have a great time, and learn a lot too!

I took the children out of school for the 10 days that we are allowed, providing we have school permission. The Headteacher said travel is an wonderful opportunity and of course she would grant the request. I realise not all schools operate like this and we are lucky. If possible it would be better if we could go in the school holidays but it seems everyone puts up their prices. Even trying to get a villa I was told that it was half term week and the price was increased. Only one villa owner said this but I vowed that even if he had the best villa and the only one available I wouln't use him. What difference can it make to him, if it is half term surely there is no problem with bookings so why put the price up, the only people who lose out are those with children. We find it hard enough to get by as it is. The silly thing is I found it cheaper to book an Orlando villa, flights and car all separately then to book a package holiday to the Canaries.
