Definitely 'what you see is what you get'! Absolutely no extras, or nasty surprises when you go to collect the car.
We often stand at the check-in desk and watch the horror on the faces of some newly arrived Brits who, having booked their cars through travel operators find, to their dismay, that they have only the most basic level of insurance cover, and have to stump up a considerable amount to cover the extras that they need. It is a big shock to have to find an extra hundred pounds or more when you have just crossed the Atlantic for your dream holiday.
We would never consider driving in the US without all the insurances that are provided by this site, as standard. So it's good to know that when we book the car we have everything we need.
And of course, when comparing prices, that really does have to be taken into account - you won't get a better deal - just make sure you are comparing like for like. There are many internet sites offering what seem to be 'great' deals, but when you read the small print they do not offer the same security and peace of mind that this site does.

Having been one of those hapless first time visitors who paid about £500 for additional insurances, taxes, etc on a 'free' car, I know exactly what you mean Ellie!
Never again - just recently got our voucher for about our fifth car rental from here with no problems, great prices and absolutely no nasty 'surprises'!

We have just booked flights through Charter Travel and they tried to insist that I take out the car hire with them as part of the 'deal'. Told them that no airline was going to tell me where to book my car hire with, and I would be booking through this site as usual.
Jane
Just recommended them to a friend who is booking, she was looking to do a fly-drive with Virgin, I told her that it would still be cheaper to book the car throught this site and than pay all the hiked insurance prices with Virgin.[msnoo][msnsmile]

It does seem that many of the 'specials' coming in from Virgin are only available if you book a car. Jane, how did you get round this? Did you have to pay more for the flights?

This is very interesting and I hope that Uncle John and Blott take note. Charter told me exactly the same thing about 20 months ago and being new to the forum at the time, I believed them and booked the car as well as the flights with them. Only later did I learn that Charter were NOT supposed to sell Car Hire to people directed to them for flights by Roger or the others. Last year there was more discussion on this subject and I recall John saying that the matter had been sorted out. Does Zerotone's experience mean that Charter are once again trangressing their agreements?

The way around this is to book a fly-drive which includes the free car. Of course the insurance options are optional and you can go with no pre-paid insurance.
Take this option and just don't collect the car.
An alternative is to book a holiday whether with Virgin Holidays or somebody else, decline the car, go for the cheapest hotel for the first couple of nights of your holiday. You will be charged in most cases and £25 fee for self planned itinery for the nights you are not booking the hotel for (one off £25 not per night). Of course you just don't turn up at the hotel.
This is one of the tricks used by Airline consolidators. In order to get the cheap fares they add a hotel for the first night (of course you will never see that this has been booked), this qualifies as a packaged booking rather than flight only.
Hope all that makes sense.
