Just to give confidence to those trying to give-up, back in 1994 I had an Electrician patient who used to smoke 35 to 40 cigarettes a day. He had seen several of my colleagues who never really told him properly why his habit was a health hazard. I explained this to him without pulling any punches when he saw me for the first time with a bad chest infection, and he left determined to give-up. There were no nicotine patches or Zyban those days and yet he went from 40 to zero in about 2 weeks by sheer willpower and remained that way. Only a couple of years ago, my former colleague there told me that the electrician had remained a non-smoker.

We obviously need more doctors like you Nostromo. My GP used to tell to me give up as it was bad for me. When I told him my then job was particuarly stressful, he said I could smoke one or two then!!

Our job description requires that we should be "pro-active" in making out patients give-up smoking. One can interpret that way one likes. Thanks for your comment Anna, but I want to stress that the person who deserved the credit in the example that I quoted is the patient himself - for his will power. I now use him as an example while advising other patients and it sometimes works.

My parents both used to smoke and I hate the smell of it, I have a child who I look after and as soon as she comes in the house you can smell the smoke on her it turns my tummy first thing in the morning [msncry][msnscared]

Only three days Maggie, you can do it[msnsmile2]

My son goes "sticking up" at skittles once a week and when he comes home he reeks of cigarette smoke, so all his clothes are immediately in the wash as he doesn't like the smell and nor do I.[msnsmile2]

It must have been a few years ago. Nowadays, a GP advising that sort of thing risks serious disciplinary action - and quite rightly too. In any case, the idea that smoking relieves stress is nonsense. Nicotine is an alkaloid with many properties similar to caffeine - increase in heart rate, sweating etc, all the components of increased stress! The reason stressed people reach for their cigarettes is simply because that is something they can do for a diversion. Apparently, Victorian women used to knit furiously wen stressed!
