    Mumps!!

I fly out on March the 3rd and yesterday discovered I've got Mumps! The right hand side of my face is swolen so I look like like a lopsided hampster.
Does anyone know how long this will take to go down? So far its only been 24 hours.

And if only one side is swollen now it could be the other might come up later.

Nothing personal but if you are flying from Gatwick with Virgin on 3rd March please don't give it to us (neither I nor my husband has had it).

Hope you're feeling better soon, I remember when my mum had it (along with my 2 brothers and 2 sisters) it was very painful for her as an adult - muggins just had to do all the shopping etc for the rest of the family whilst they were quarantined for a few weeks in total as they came down with it one by one (this was 35 years ago so things might have changed and you are probably allowed out much sooner).

Spoke to Dr yesterday, can be contagious for up to 21 days but don't know how long I,ve had it??

If him in doors gets it it won't be his face swelling up though!, what a pair we will look, me with a hampster face and him walking like John Wayne! (His Mum has told us that he had it when he was a baby, so hopefully he will be OK)

Still it's nice to get a few days extra off work.[msnscared]

But Maggie, don't you love it's a small world? Mr M hates it with passion and point blank refuses to go on the ride, he says once that music is in his head it stays with him for days.

Diane, just because you have one Parotid gland swollen, it does not automatically mean that it is mumps. You can get other forms of infective parotitis, some of which (NOT mumps, though) can be treated with antibiotics. It could even be a blocked salivary duct. I suggest that you see your GP.

I think there is a very good chance that you will be fully recovered by 3rd March. Certainly, any bacterial infection would have responded to antibiotics; if it turns out to be a viral infection (like mumps) antibiotics are useless, but anti-inflammatory agents like Ibuprofen will relieve the pain and swelling - again, check with your GP if these are suitable for you, given any medical history. Both the symptoms and infectivity should be negligible by the time ou are due to fly out. All the best.

Thanks for that Nostro, saw the GP yesterday and he confirmed it was Mumps. He has given me antibiotics just in case it's a dental abscess. He also told me to take Ibuprofen for the pain, which has helped a lot. Apparently we have quite a lot of Mumps cases in this area at the moment, as I work with the general public looks like I possibly picked it up at work.

Is there a chance that I may now get it on the other side to balance things out?

Thanks for all your kind thoughts - its much appreciated.[msnsmile]
