How in the world did you get the mumps!!!??? I thought that was one disease on its way to being wiped out, due to vacinations. I sure hope so, as I never had them as a kid, but today's kids all get immunizied against them.

Mumps is far from being 'wiped out', even though its incidence has fallen dramatically in recent years. Of course, the immunisation that the present day kids are having helps and by the time they get to be adults, it might be eradicated. But one cannot be certain; only time will tell.

I was being cautious as I was thinking Nostromo, 3rd March is only next Thursday so if the other side didnt come up for a few days (if it ever does) then it's quite close.

Really feel for you, I had mumps at the grand old age of 21, over Christmas and New Year - real good fun!
Hope you recover soon... unfortunately it took me 4 weeks before the Doctor allowed me back to work.

    Fingers crossed

I also thought mumps was a thing of the past!!! I haven't heard of a case of the mumps since I was kid. Sounds like you have enough time to heal up and get on your way to Florida - here's hoping!!

Hope you get well in time for your holiday. It seems that lots of these 'old' diseases are coming back. Me and my daughter both got whooping cough at the beginning of December. It lasts 3 months so we are getting better. We'd both been vaccinated but its starting to become apparent that it wears off after 10 years.[msnsad]What with that and people not vaccinating their children through fear these illnesses will soon become rampant again.

"We'd both been vaccinated but its starting to become apparent that it wears off after 10 years."

Chris another one that is becoming recurrent is TB. Partially because of the immigrants coming into the country who have never been vaccinated, but I also found out recently from my niece that her baby who is now 14 months old had to be vaccinated at a few weeks as they asked if anybody in the family had ever had TB and her dads uncle who they were in contact with had it many years ago. Apparently it has been found the elderly who suffered from it as they get older and their immune system weakens the TB becomes active enough , not for them to get it but to pass it on to young babies.

Coincidentally we wondered if that would explain why our daughter when tested a few years ago was told she did not need the vaccination as she had either been in contact with TB or had a natural immunity to it and my husbands mother had TB and was ill for quite a long time with it around 50-52 years ago. She was about 60 when our daughter was born 18 years ago and this was obviously before the latest research was available.

Thank you all for you good wishes, I am happy to report this morning that the swelling has started to go down, my throat is still a little scratchy but much improved and I only have a dull ache in my ear. No sign of the other side swelling up so maybe I'm on the road to recovery, fingers crossed.[grin]

Good. Just a couple more days and you should be able to pass for a normal (non-lopsided) hampster. You might just succeed in fooling those US Immos. All the best.[msnwink]
