Remember you can get a better rate through a broker, you do need a reasonable amount of cah to get the better rates though.

I can usually get about .4 under rate on ceefax, so is hovering at 1.86 at the mo.

Will be transfering some money soon so will keep an eye on it.

I think if i remember rightly in 1990 I did get almost $2 to the pound $1.96 I think it was, from a high street bank too!! That was when we was in the ERM The £ was being kept at an artificial level by the Goverment. The following year we left the ERM and the £ found it's natural level of around $1.50. It made a difference when shopping that year!! Our pound is strong now but the Dollar is weak hence this increase. So we might as well make hay while the sun shines as it may not last forever..[msnsmile2]

Cruella mentioned using a broker to get good exchange rate.

    Thanks

we have used Hifx to send our deposit monies over. they don't charge a transfer fee and the rate is competitive, but you would be wise to register with two or three companies and get a quote from all of them. Mind you if you go back to your choice an hour later, the rate may have altered.

    good luck

Xe.com are also pretty competitive Daglish.

If you are doing a large amount you could also try your bank. You need to make sure that you talk to their specialist currency people, not the usual branch staff. If the amount you are dealing is large enough (usually around £10k is the point) they should be able to offer you a commercial rate rather than the retail rate. This is usually very competitive with the likes of hifx and xe, with the benefits of not having to set-up different accounts and wait while all the money moves around. You will know you are speaking to the right people at the bank when they have to put you on hold to get a cross rate from the fx dealers and then tell you that they can only hold this rate for 30 seconds or so.
