    Columbia space shuttle crashes

I am sure all of you will have heard by now about the space shuttle Columbia, almost 17 years to the day to the Challenger tragedy. Our thoughts go out to the families of the astronauts and to the American nation in general.

I heard sketchy details on a newsflash before we went out and have just returned. How awful, particularly as we used a shuttle launch on our 2002 Christmas cards.

As you say, Julie, we feel for the families involved. No-one who has ever watched a launch or landing of a shuttle (even if it was only on TV) can have failed to be inspired by the bravery and courage of the astronauts.

The best tribute I have seen today is on the professional pilots rumour network forums (www.pprune.org, then click on Forums):

"for crew of one of the ultimate flying jobs,

    RIP"

Sums my feelings up in a few short words.
