    The Flu

    Can anybody help?

We are flying out to Florida Sunday morning, however my 13 year old daughter has just gone down with what seems to be the flu. She has all the symptoms, headache, temperature. aching body etc etc....

Everybody seems to be dropping like flies around us and so I am a little concerned as to wether it is safe to fly while ill?

If it is uncomplicated 'flu', she could be back to normal by sunday. Kids take the flu much better on their stride than adults, although at 13, your daughter is almost an adult. I suggest that you put her to bed and give her the usual 'Lemsip' type over the counter flu medication and see how it goes. If she has improved significantly in the next 24 hours, you should be all right to take the chance. Tane the medication with you.

When you said that "others around you are dropping like flies" I took it to mean those NOT travelling with you, right?

    Thanks for that Nostromo.

Yes the others I meant were friends and relations. My youngest(11) has had a cough only and me and my hubby are ok so far.....!(Just the 4 of us going)

What is generally the plan of action if one of us is ill on the day of flight. Who do you call. The company we bought the tickets off, insurance company?

    Hope I'm just worrying unnecessarily!

Another thing about your daughter is that she should be OK to fly as long as her fever has subsided with the medication. But if she develops an earache in the next 24 hours, see a Dr to be sure that she has not developed an ear infection.

If you think you are unable to go, I expect you'll have to call the company that you bought the tickets from as well as the Travel Insurance people. Let's hope it does not come to that.

    Hi Mel

Sorry to hear your daughter's not well. You could try giving her some Echinacea. We use it in winter to boost the immune system and if her symptoms have only just started, it may help her overcome it more quickly. It would be a good idea for you all to take some.

You could also try using some tea tree oil - if you have an oil burner you could burn some in her bedroom and in your living room.

Like Nostromo says, put her to bed, plenty of fluids and regular paracetamol or lemsip and I'm sure she'll be fine.

Good luck and I will be keeping my fingers crossed that you will all be on that flight on Sunday

We have had the same problem this week we are flying at the weekend and my daughter has been off school with flu like symptoms. Took her to the docs and he has given her antibiotics NOT to take now but if the fever returns and or an earache comes on we have got some cover, this may be a good idea for your daughter

Thanx for all your well wishes.

She's fast asleep now, so hope that's doing her some good!

And Alfie hope your daughter is ok too.

    Thank you
