You can use rhe phone as a two way radio, it is fantatsic. Works accross the country. I have been in NY and speaking to my wife in Kissimmee, crystal clear. One monthly fee and no minute charge.
They are bringing it out here in the UK but they will be chargin g by the minute (typical UK rip off). Hopefully it will go to a set fee one day.

Nextel works on vodaphone network in england without any problems. You cannot use theb direct connect facility yet (something I really miss).

This is a bit unrelated... but... I don't know the restrictions on going from one country to the next, but how does it really work?

Example: I use Nextel, and if I went to the UK (I don't think they have Nextel) would my phone even work?

Direct connect? What is this? Please explain

    I thought that's what you meant. We are moving to Florida soon on an E2 visa and will be looking to get some phones soon after arrival. Where would I go locally to Kissimmee/Poinciana areas to get nextel phones? We would be looking for contract phones rather than pay as you go. How much approx should we expect to pay for 4 phones. Also is it possible to get contract phones without a social security number? (we won't have one initially on arrival}

Hopefully the UK will get DC soon... I couldn't live without it. My DC minutes are TRIPLE what my celluar minutes are... And like you said, I can DC unlimited nationwide for no additional charge.

My understanding is when using your mobile in Florida to make a local call you are charged twice,as the call is diverted via the UK, and then forwarded to the local number. It is more expensive to make local calls than it is to phone the UK on a UK registered mobile. Text messages to the UK from Florida on T Mobile are 40p a message, this does not include the VAT.

Something like that. Whether it actually is diverted via the UK I am not sure, but Orange told me more or less the same thing. But as far as could tell, all calls (whether local or to the UK) made on my mobile while in Orlando cost about 67p a minute. So, I used it for 'emergencies' only.

We bought a Virgin Mobile from Walmart on the 192, Near Poic Blvd / Med Times

You actually get credit with them.

With virgin, there is NO number with the phone when you buy it, you ring the free phone number inside the pack and activate the phone, they then give you the number on the phone.

The good thing about them is, you can keep it activated if you wish, by buying vouchers and crediting them on the internet. once every 90 days.

We bought ours last June, and we will be using it again in the next couple of weeks.

We won't have to top it up, as I did it from the UK in Dec via their website!!

One thing to remember with UK phones is to turn off voice mail while you are in the US as you still pay for for the calls as if you received them.

my friend bought a mobile in the florida mall. Not sure of the network -but it was $99 and pay as you go.

She got quite a few free minutes on it-so she reckoned it was a good deal.

She used it to ring the uk-and once she remeembered to carry it about with her-and even switch it on-she wondered how she had managed without one.

One of the things we have considered is to have a regular 'pay-as-you-go' phone bought in the USA and used only while we are there. We go to the US at least once a year, but to different places and so it would be different local networks. That way, we might save a lot on local calls and maybe even calls made to the UK. I can then keep my Orange Tri-band for use within the UK and non-US holidays only.

Would this turn out to be cost-effective?
