Sarah, I'm so very sorry to hear about your son and hope he makes a rapid and full recovery.

I did think that you'd been back too long for your son's illness to be related to WNV as it's supposed to have an incubation period of 2 - 15 days and he would have to have been bitten by an infected mosquito?

This is extremely rare "Even in areas where the virus is circulating, very few mosquitoes are infected with the virus. Even if the mosquito is infected, less than 1% of people who get bitten and become infected will get severely ill. The chances you will become severely ill from any one mosquito bite are extremely small." http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/west...ansmission.htm

Whatever the cause of his illness, I'm sure all the forum would join me in wishing him better soon.

he's been in hospital for two weeks and we had been home 10 days when it hit. He has the exact same symptons of WNV hence why they are testing him for it, he has meningitis and encephalitis, and because of us coming back from Florida it remained in my mind what it COULD be and i insisted on the tests. We have been told that this strain of viral illness is so incredibly rare in this country most of the hospital staff have never even seen cases of it before. The usual viruses like this are usually seen in tropical countries and africa etc.

    Thanks for ur good wishes.

This subject is very close to my heart right now as I have a son in hospital with meningitis and encephalitis who is undergoing tests for west nile virus as we had recently returned from Florida and he has the symptons which are associated with WNV. Before this happened to us, I would never have believed that something like this could have happened, but I would like everyone to be aware that no matter how small the odds may be, there IS a chance. We are still awaiting the test results on this, because obviously in England people - even in the medical field and whatnot, are not aware of this virus. However the effects are catastrophic. Take whatever precautions you can and whilst my family are going through a nightmare right now, obviously don't build it out of proportion either. Just be safe.

I hope that your son makes a full recovery Sarah. If you need more info on WNV, the link posted by Twizzle on the previous page is also very good.

I know we wondered if WNV made us sick one time.....after clearing trees all summer and getting bite bad even using spray......both me and hubby fell down sick......WNV came to mind because we had a lot of dead birds in the garden...and a young child was sick with WNV at the local school......we both got over it.....so never went for tests....they were at the time not needing info about dead birds......but they were out spraying all year.....something I've never seen before......
